J&M Food Products Company specially packs its full line of, refrigeration-free main course meals into two different types of packaging.
This section pertains to J&M® meals packed in long-life, foil pouch packages, and fully assembled, military rations.

Special Packaging-Foil Pouches of J&M® Main Course Meals:
Main course meals are packaged in special long-life, boil-in-bag foil pouches that:

• are fully-cooked, ready-to-eat without adding water
• are 8 ounces (227 gm)
• reheat within minutes in boiling water or with a ration heater packed inside each military ration.
• are flat, easy-to-pack
• Lifetime: up to 5 year shelf life when consistently stored below 80F (27C)

MREs (Meals, Ready-To-Eat)
J&M Food Products Company created and supplies the US Military with its halal ration needs.

J&M® dhabiha halal US military rations are for an individual soldier’s use and differ from  standard military-issue rations called Meals, Ready-To-Eat (MREs). Unlike standard MREs, components in the halal rations are commercial products in commercial packaging with brand names you know. Unlike standard MREs which are produced and then stored for about 3 or more years before being sent to men and women in the armed services to eat in the field, J&M® dhabiha halal US rations are assembled and shipped to sailors, soldiers, airmen/women, and marines to enjoy right away.

Since J&M® rations are not destined for government warehouses for three years, they do not carry the same three year shelf life requirement of MREs. However, they have about a one year shelf life from manufacture, calculated as the earliest code dated component in the ration.

In addition to US Military MREs, J&M Food Products Company also creates and supplies day pack rations under contract to international militaries. These international day pack rations have approximately a 3 year shelf life when consistently stored below 80F (27C). Shelf life varies with storage conditions and temperatures. All J&M® certified halal and dhabiha halal US rations meet US Surgeon General nutritional requirements for an individual active soldier’s field use and have approximately 1200 calories per ration, or 3600 calories per day (three meals per day). J&M® dhabiha halal US rations have less fat, fewer calories from fat, and a lower percentage of calories from fat than MREs.


Emergency MREs, Rations and Meals
J&M Food Products Company sells its meals and rations for disaster-relief efforts in both Islamic (requiring halal certification) and non-Islamic countries (where halal certification is not required).

C. Best Used By Date:
Every case of halal military rations has two codes printed on the side of the Master Case. The first code is the production date. The production date is the date the full ration was assembled. It reads as: " PACK DATE:  DD MONTH YEAR". The "DD" means the day of the month it was packed. "MONTH" is the month it was packed and "YEAR" is the year of the pack.

The second code is the Best Used By date. It is coded as "BEST BY MONTH YEAR". This month and year is the date by which we recommend consuming the ration. While some of the components inside the master case may have a later Best By date printed on its packaging, including the J&M® main course meals, we use the earliest Best Used By date for any  one of the components inside that case as the "Best By" date for the entire assembled ration.
